British Born Nigerian, Chi Onwurah wins big at the UK general elections

British-Born Nigerian, Chinyelu “Chi” Onwurah won the first seat of the night at Newcastle Central.  She has now become the first black woman to rep Newcastle.


Through her official twitter handle she wrote; “So proud & grateful to be re-elected as MP for my home city, Newcastle Central. Thanks to everyone who voted for me & everyone who voted”
Chi Onwurah is a British Labour Party politician who was elected at the 2010 general election as the Member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne Central, succeeding the previous Labour MP Jim Cousins, who had decided to step down after 23 years.
Chi won 24,071 votes, comfortably beating the Tory candidate Steve Kyte who had 9,134 votes. Nick Cott, the Liberal Democrat candidate, secured 1,812 votes and David Muat, the Ukip candidate, won 1,482 votes. The Green candidate Peter Thomson won 595 votes.
