A 21-year-old student at Stanford University, Scott Bertics, has killed his ex-girlfriend, Claire Orton, and himself on Tuesday Morning.

Bertics allegedly shot his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend and then himself at her home in San Francisco Bay Area.
Orton is an honour student at San Diego University and a cross-country runner.
According to a Daily Mail report, police in Northern California are investigating the apparent murder-suicide.
Police say that Bertics shot Orton at the doorstep of her home then pulled the gun on himself.
A neighbour had called the police about shooting around 6:50 a.m.
When the police arrived, they found the lifeless bodies of Bertics and Orton
Walnut Creek police officer, Lt. Lanny Edwards, said the tragedy is hard to explain.
"Two young adults like this, I wouldn't say this if this wasn't true, but these were two upstanding citizens," Edwards said.
"There weren't red flags. There weren't drugs, or anything like that involved.'
Neighbors say that Bertics was not happy with their ended romance but there had been no reason to believe he would kill his ex.
The United States is set to help Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive led by President Muhammadu Buhari to track down billions of dollars in stolen assets. America will also increase military assistance to fight Boko Haram terrorists as Washington seeks to “reset” ties with Africa’s biggest economy.

President Buhari's visit to Washington is viewed as a chance to set the seal on improving ties.

US cooperation with Buhari’s predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, had virtually ground to a halt over issues that included his refusal to investigate corruption by people highly placed in his government.

“President (Barack Obama) has long seen Nigeria as arguably the most important strategic country in sub-Saharan Africa. The question is: would there be an opportunity to deepen our engagement? That opportunity is now,” US Deputy Secretary of State, Tony Blinken, told Reuters.

Since Buhari’s election, Washington has committed $5m in new support to a multi-national task force set up to fight the group. This is in addition to at least $34m it is providing for Nigeria and others.

“We’ve made it clear. There are additional things that can be done, especially now that there is a new military leadership in place,” a senior US official said.

Nigeria’s new Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has vowed that under his command, Boko Haram would either beg for a cease-fire or face the wrath of highly motivated and combat ready soldiers.

The Borno State-born Major General, who took over command of the nation’s army last week, said he was ready to lead soldiers to the dens and enclaves of the insurgents.

He has therefore re-christened the operational code of the counter insurgency efforts from “Operation Zaman Lafiya” to “Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole” – which in Hausa means ‘the quest for peace becomes a must’.

Buratai, who was in Yobe State to celebrate the Islamic Eid-el-fitri festival with Nigerian troops, moved to Borno on Sunday afternoon. He arrived Maiduguri by road and was received by the Borno State Deputy Governor, Zannah Mustapha, who immediately accompanied the army boss to visit the 103 Battalion of the 7 Division, Maiduguri in Konduga Town where they hailed the troops gallantry.

“The ongoing activities of Boko Haram is assuming an alarming dimensions in Borno state and other parts of the north east,” Buratai said. “We will not tolerate the killing of citizens and destruction of property; in as much as we urge you (troops) to adhere strictly to human rights abuses, the time to crush Hoko Haram and other criminal activities in this country is now or never.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the travails of former National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki, at the hands of federal security operatives as illegal and unconstitutional.

The party alleged that restricted movement on the former NSA as occasioned by the security operatives was against the tenets of democracy, claiming that Nigerians are becoming scared.

“I came into Abuja today because I read the situation about the invasion of the house of the former NSA and his detention and house arrest. So, I drove to his house as a personal friend to see him and to find out what is happening. Then about seven or eight security operatives came out and they said that I cannot see him because the house is under security watch. And I asked them, security watch in terms of treason or terrorism? And they said they are not in a position to say.

“And why I asked this question is that if he is under security watch on account of corruption or any other reason, then it’s totally against the constitution of this country because this is a democracy and democratic tenets and principles apply. The fact is that we deserve basic freedom, liberty and movements associated with democracy."

The national publicity secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh, who disclosed this to newsmen who monitored events around the premises at 12:55, recounted that he was refused entry by security operatives.

Metuh who said he had the mandate of PDP to visit Dasuki, described the act as political persecution.

Earlier, attempts by a couple to gain entry into the residence of Dasuki were politely rebuffed by security operatives at the gate. The couple came in a fawn colored Kia Saloon car at 12:33 and left at 12:35.

It was however gathered that the former NSA was in his residence as at time of these visits.

“Please, Mr President, father of our nation, we ask for basic respect for human rights. Let our inalienable rights be observed and respected in a democracy. Freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. What is happening here now is totally against the tenets of democracy,” Metuh added.

Whatever trick this guy is using... he needs to dissect it further to see how the society can benefit from it and not just for magic and public show. That's how the whites got ahead. More pics...
